Master Rituals Ⅱ：Weston's Nudes

便利堂が開催するHariban Award 2021の最優秀賞受賞者タラ・クライネックの個展『Master Rituals II: Weston’s Nudes』を開催します。クライネックは『Masters Rituals』の第二章となる本シリーズで、アメリカ写真の父と呼ばれる写真家エドワード・ウェストンの写真集『NUDES』と『DARKROOM2』に焦点を当てます。ウェストンが写した象徴的な女性のヌードモデルに扮してセルフポートレートを撮影し、写真家として、また被写体としてその写真集を書き換える試みを行いました。その中で、有色人種の女性が古典的写真の規範から切り離されていたという事実と、ウェストンの写真集に身を捧げた女性たちの顔や頭、知的貢献がいかに写真というメディアから排除されていたかという歴史を提示します。 洗練された写真技術と構成力、モチベーションによって仕上げられた本作は、彼女が所属するドイツのThomas Zander Galleryの協力によって、受賞作の8点のみならずシリーズ全18点がコロタイプによって刷り上げられました。パンデミックの最中、2021年に開催されたHariban Awardで受賞したクライネックは、コロタイプ工房に来て、実際に職人と協働することを希望し、レジデンスは2023年6月まで持ち越されました。2週間の滞在制作はとても活気あるものとなり、ついにお披露目となった本作、ぜひご高覧ください。 Benrido is pleased to present “Master Rituals II: Weston’s Nudes”, a solo exhibition by Tarrah Krajnak, the Grand Prize Winner of the 2021 Hariban Award. In this second chapter of the “Master Rituals” series, Krajnak focuses on the photo books “Nudes” and “Darkroom2” by photographer Edward Weston, known as the father of American photography. The self-portraits were taken by Krajnak in the guise of iconic female nude models photographed by Weston, in an attempt to rewrite the body of work as both photographer and subject. In doing so, the work presents the fact that women of colour have been excluded from the norms of classical photography and the history of how the faces, heads and intellectual contributions of the women who dedicated themselves to Weston’s photographic books were excluded from the medium of photography. In collaboration with her German-based gallery, Galerie Thomas Zander, not only the eight award-winning works but all eighteen works of refined photographic technique, composition and concept were printed in collotype. Krajnak won the Hariban Award in 2021, during the pandemic, and she wanted to come to Benrido’s collotype atelier in person, so the residency was postponed until June 2023. She was born in Lima, Peru in 1979, and is currently based in Eugene, Oregon. She is represented by Thomas Zander Galerie, Cologne/Paris. Krajnak was recently awarded the Jury Prize of the Louis Roederer Discovery Award at Les Rencontres d’Arles, The Lewis Baltz Research Fund Award (Le Bal, Paris), and the Hariban Award Grand Prize (Benrido, Kyoto, Japan). In 2020 she won the Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University for her first book El Jardín De Senderos Que Se Bifurcan (DAIS 2021) which was named to MoMA’s list of the top ten photo books of the year and shortlisted for Aperture's First Book Award. She has since published Master Rituals II: Weston's Nudes (TBW 2022) and RePose (FW Books 2023).
